What to say on a sobriety milestone

Short, honest, and about them. These starting points work in a card, a text, or out loud.

A few honest lines go further than a speech.

You don’t need the perfect words. Write to the person, not the number: what you’ve noticed, what you appreciate, and that you’re glad they’re here. The lines below are starting points — make them yours.

Starting points

Copy a line, then make it yours. These are for your own card, text, or email — Dear Milestone doesn’t send anything on your behalf.

Keep it simple

  • I’m proud of you, and I’m glad you’re here.
  • Thinking of you today. No reply needed.

Name what you noticed

  • I’ve loved seeing you show up for yourself this year.
  • You’ve been so steady. It hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Offer, don’t assume

  • If you feel like marking the day, I’d love to take you to dinner. If not, that’s fine too.

For someone you sponsor or mentor

  • One day at a time, and you’ve had a lot of them. Good work.

Worth avoiding

Making it about the past

Skip before-and-after comparisons and stories about how bad things were.

Big-battle language

“Warrior,” “fight,” and “beat it” can feel heavy. A steady, appreciative tone usually fits better.

Announcing it

Don’t post publicly or tell a group unless they’ve said they want that.
